Cristina Dasilva and Enrique Cadezas are a young, enthusiastic married couple with a passion for good company and even better food. The couple launched Cocoalatte in 2009 by Christie and St. Clair West before the strip became a magnet for trendy, niche cafes. Today, Enrique is usually found behind the bar serving up hot drinks, while Cristina's typically busy preparing food in the kitchen.

"The name came up because we knew we wanted a dessert cafe. We wanted to incorporate chocolate in our drinks, croissants, waffles, crepes, and cakes," says Cristina. And while everyone loves chocolate, Cristina and Enrique quickly realized the neighbourhood was hungry for a local brunch joint. So they shifted their hours earlier to serve up breakfast and lunch, while still offering coffee and dessert.

Cocoalatte — a blend of semi-sweet chocolate, espresso and steamed milk — was the café’s original signature drink. That is, until Cristina and Enrique discovered Nutella Day. "We introduced Nutella lattes for one week and it exploded. Clients returned and said, ‘I love this. Can you keep making this?’ and now it's our most popular drink," says Cristina.
